Abstract

This study investigates the impact of peer pressure on the academic performance of psychology students. It examines how peer interactions influence students’ educational experiences, aiming to identify both the positive and negative effects on academic achievement. The findings of this research will provide insights for educators and policymakers to develop strategies that support students in navigating peer pressure and improving their academic success. A descriptive-comparative research design was used to investigate the influence of peer pressure on the academic performance of college students. Cluster sampling was employed to select 100 first-year psychology students as respondents, and data were collected using questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, such as mean and frequency distribution, were utilized to analyze the data and draw conclusions regarding the relationship between peer pressure and academic performance. The study’s findings show that the majority of surveyed college students, aged 18 to 21, had a fairly balanced gender distribution and were from diverse academic sections. Positive peer pressure was notably high, with peer groups providing strong support and encouragement. On the other hand, negative peer pressure was minimal, with the most common issue being exhaustion from group work. Additionally, most respondents had a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 2.00, reflecting varying academic performance levels. The study indicates that peer pressure, especially positive peer influence, played a significant role in shaping the academic performance of first-year psychology students at Bestlink College. To enhance academic performance, institutions should implement inclusive strategies, such as mentorship programs and extracurricular activities, to provide support for all students. Additionally, addressing negative peer pressure through open communication and tailored support for high-achieving students can be effective. Targeted interventions, particularly for psychology students, along with preventive measures, will help mitigate the effects of negative peer pressure and foster a supportive academic environment. The study underscores the significance of both positive and negative peer pressure on academic performance, highlighting the role of individual coping strategies in navigating these influences.
