Abstract

Motivation is a fundamental force that drives human behavior, influencing daily tasks and goal achievement. It plays a crucial role in personal growth and self-improvement. One key type of motivation is intrinsic motivation, where individuals engage in activities, such as sports, purely for enjoyment and personal satisfaction, without external rewards. However, motivation is shaped by various factors, some of which may not be immediately apparent. To fully understand motivation, it is essential to consider both psychological and physiological influences that drive human actions. This study explores the relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic anxiety among students. It seeks to identify both the positive and negative effects of motivation on academic performance. Using a correlational research design and a quantitative approach, data was gathered from first-year psychology students at Bestlink College of the Philippines to analyze these connections. The findings suggest that while intrinsic motivation encourages students to engage in their tasks, it does not necessarily alleviate academic anxiety. Various external factors, personal circumstances, and individual differences significantly influence students' anxiety levels. Among first-year Psychology students, the study found no direct correlation between intrinsic motivation and academic anxiety. Despite many students exhibiting high intrinsic motivation, a considerable number also experienced elevated levels of academic anxiety. Therefore, it is important to recognize that intrinsic motivation alone may not be sufficient to alleviate academic anxiety among first-year Psychology students. Further investigation into the interplay between intrinsic motivation, academic anxiety, and other influencing factors is necessary to develop effective strategies for supporting students' well-being and academic performance. Researchers recommend organizing seminars to cultivate intrinsic motivation in academic pursuits and offering additional support to students experiencing academic anxiety during class activities.
