Abstract

In recent years, there has been a troubling increase in criminal activities committed by adolescents, raising significant concern among various stakeholders. This growing trend of teenage involvement in criminal behavior often stems from a departure from socially acceptable actions, with many young individuals engaging in illegal activities driven by the pursuit of monetary or material gain. This situation calls for a deeper understanding of the underlying factors contributing to adolescent delinquency and the development of effective strategies to address this concerning issue. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to youth involvement in criminal activities in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City. The research participants included 10 police officers, 10 barangay officials, and 80 community residents. A descriptive research design using a quantitative approach was employed to examine the various factors influencing criminal behavior among youth in the area. Data collection was initiated with formal authorization from relevant authorities, followed by the distribution of survey questionnaires. The study focused on key factors such as environmental influences, social media, broken families, and the prevalence of out-of-school youth as significant contributors to youth criminality in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City. The results of this study will offer valuable insights to the youth, enabling them to develop effective strategies for preventing and addressing criminal activities. The findings reveal a strong consensus among respondents regarding the identified factors, with the highest weighted mean scores indicating significant agreement. Based on these results, several recommendations are proposed. First, providing parenting classes and workshops could equip parents with the skills to effectively manage their children's behavior and promote positive attitudes. Additionally, parents should be encouraged to monitor their children's internet usage and have open discussions about the potential dangers of social media. Furthermore, implementing awareness programs to reduce stigmas surrounding former offenders and investing in reintegration facilities would contribute to their successful reentry into society.
