Abstract

Juvenile delinquency remains a pressing concern in urban communities, with parental involvement widely recognized as a key factor in its prevention. In Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon, Novaliches, Quezon City, the rise in juvenile delinquency cases underscores the need to examine how parental engagement influences youth behavior. This study seeks to explore the relationship between parental involvement and delinquent activities, addressing a gap in local research by focusing on the role of parents in curbing such behaviors within this specific community. The research is both timely and relevant, given the growing concern over crime rates and questions surrounding the effectiveness of existing rehabilitation programs. A mixed-methods research design was utilized, integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were gathered through surveys administered to 35 parents of juveniles involved in delinquent activities, while qualitative insights were obtained from in-depth interviews with 10 members of the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children and 5 police officers from the Women and Children's Protection Desk. The study assessed the extent of parental involvement in their children's education, discipline, and communication, and examined the frequency and types of juvenile offenses reported within the barangay. The study revealed that higher levels of parental involvement were significantly associated with lower incidences of juvenile delinquency. Parents who actively monitored academic performance, maintained open communication, and enforced consistent discipline reported fewer behavioral issues among their children. The presence of community support programs and collaboration with local authorities further contributed to positive outcomes for at-risk youth. However, several technical and logistical barriers—such as limited access to school activities, conflicting work schedules, and lack of awareness of available resources—were identified as obstacles to sustained parental engagement. The results indicate that parental involvement plays a critical role in preventing juvenile delinquency in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon. Active parenting—characterized by close monitoring of academic performance, open communication, and consistent discipline—emerges as a key protective factor against youth involvement in delinquent activities. The findings underscore the importance of community-based initiatives that empower and equip parents, alongside accessible support services provided by local authorities. Strengthening collaboration among parents, community leaders, and educational institutions can foster a proactive and unified approach to juvenile crime prevention. Future research should investigate strategies for overcoming barriers to parental engagement and assess the long-term effectiveness of community-driven rehabilitation programs.
