Abstract

The Philippines has a long history of crime and disorder, making the role of police officers and barangay tanod essential in maintaining law enforcement and public safety. Barangay tanod, also known as barangay watchmen, assist in enforcing national and local laws within their communities. While they work closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP), they are not formally part of the organization. Instead, they augment police efforts, fulfilling responsibilities that officers may not be able to address immediately, particularly in barangay-level crime prevention. This study utilized a descriptive research design and a quantitative approach to assess the role of police officers and barangay tanod in crime prevention. A total of 80 residents, 10 barangay tanod, and 10 police officers from Barangay Batasan Hills, Quezon City participated. Respondents were given a survey questionnaire after obtaining their consent. The researchers distributed the questionnaires, waited for participants to complete them, and collected the responses afterward. The findings indicate that the role of PNP officers and barangay tanod in crime prevention, maintaining peace and order, and their understanding of duties and responsibilities were rated as "strongly agree." However, one challenge identified was the intense public scrutiny faced by law enforcers, leading to criticism, mistrust, and decreased morale. An action plan was proposed to address these challenges and improve community relations. The study recommends the development of effective communication strategies to strengthen public engagement, address community concerns, and provide timely updates on law enforcement activities. Utilizing social media, community meetings, and traditional media can help law enforcers connect with different segments of the population. Additionally, implementing measures to improve transparency and trust between law enforcement and the community is essential.
