Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the roles and responsibilities of the Barangay Fire Brigade Team and to assess how their efforts contribute to the prevention and mitigation of fire-related incidents in Barangay Masambong, Quezon City. The Barangay Fire Brigade serves as a key component in ensuring community fire safety through initiatives that promote preparedness, raise public awareness, and deliver timely emergency responses. Their active involvement is essential in fostering a safer environment by minimizing fire hazards and enhancing the community’s capacity to respond effectively during fire emergencies. The primary objective of this research was to assess the role of the Barangay Fire Brigade in enhancing fire safety in Barangay Masambong. A descriptive research method was utilized to collect relevant data concerning the brigade’s functions and effectiveness. Through random sampling, the study engaged ten (10) members of the Barangay Fire Brigade and forty (40) residents. A survey questionnaire served as the primary data-gathering instrument, with responses analyzed using percentage distribution and weighted mean. The researchers personally approached the selected residents to invite them to participate and obtained their informed consent before distributing the questionnaires. Ample time was provided for respondents to complete the forms, which were subsequently collected and analyzed to conclude. The study revealed that the primary challenge faced by the Barangay Fire Brigade is the lack of proper training and adequate equipment, as indicated by 68% of the respondents. This highlights the urgent need for regular capacity-building programs and access to modern firefighting tools to enhance their effectiveness. As presented in Table 10, the most recommended solution for improving fire safety in the barangay is to explore alternative funding sources, a strategy supported by 92% of participants. Securing additional financial resources would enable the implementation of comprehensive fire safety programs and facilitate the procurement of essential equipment and supplies. The researchers recommend several measures to strengthen the effectiveness of the Barangay Fire Brigade. These include clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of each member, conducting regular training sessions to ensure operational preparedness, and recruiting qualified personnel with relevant skills. Additionally, the brigade should organize frequent fire drills, hold debriefing sessions to evaluate and improve response protocols, and maintain comprehensive records of all activities and incidents. Lastly, establishing strong partnerships with local and national agencies is essential to access additional support, funding, and resources for sustained improvement in fire safety.
