Abstract

A person deprived of liberty (PDL), commonly referred to as a prisoner or inmate, is someone who has been forcibly restrained, imprisoned, or confined against their will. This term applies to individuals who are either serving a sentence or awaiting trial. Crime occurs daily, with some inmates being innocent, others guilty, and some admitting to their offenses. This study focuses on the treatment programs provided by correctional institutions, particularly for incarcerated women. The purpose of this study is to examine and understand the various aspects of these programs and their effectiveness in addressing the needs and challenges faced by female prisoners. This study utilized a quantitative research method, specifically a descriptive research design. A total of 50 respondents participated, including 25 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and 25 correctional officers from the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City. The researchers used purposive sampling to determine the appropriate number of respondents, and questionnaires were distributed to collect data. Findings indicate that respondents "strongly agree" with the effectiveness of the treatment programs offered at CIW, particularly in education, skills development, and reintegration programs. However, the study also revealed challenges, such as limited access to mental health professionals and services, which complicates addressing the complex mental health needs of female inmates. To address limited access to mental health professionals and services, individualized treatment plans should be developed to cater to each inmate’s mental health, substance abuse, and skill development needs. Furthermore, to overcome insufficient funding and resources for rehabilitation programs, collaboration with external organizations is recommended to provide job placement, housing assistance, and community support upon release, ensuring a smoother reintegration process.
