Abstract

A child in conflict with the law refers to a minor accused of committing an offense that would be considered a crime if committed by an adult. Unlike adult offenders, these children are subject to juvenile justice, which prioritizes rehabilitation and reintegration over punishment. Understanding the factors that contribute to juvenile delinquency is essential in developing preventive and intervention measures that support at-risk youth. This study employed a quantitative research approach using a descriptive research design to assess various risk factors associated with juvenile delinquency. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 60 respondents from Barangay Batasan Hills, Quezon City. The sample included 20 law enforcers and barangay tanods, 20 parents, and 20 representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Demographic analysis revealed that most respondents were female, aged 34-41, married, college graduates, and had resided in Barangay Batasan Hills for over 11 years. Findings indicate that poverty, peer influence, parenting styles, and behavioral issues were identified as significant risk factors, with the majority of respondents strongly agreeing on their impact. The most prevalent issue reported was drug and alcohol abuse, which was found to impair judgment and increase the likelihood of youth engaging in criminal activities (50 respondents). The most recommended intervention was the provision of parenting classes and support services to help parents create a stable and nurturing home environment (54 respondents). To address the risk factors associated with juvenile delinquency, the study proposes several recommendations. First, alternative activities such as sports, art classes, and outdoor programs should be introduced to promote positive behaviors among youth. Second, parenting classes and support services should be offered to foster stable home environments and reduce delinquency. These initiatives should be led by professionals in psychology, sociology, and criminology. Third, access to quality education and after-school programs, including arts, career exploration, and vocational training, should be ensured to keep children engaged in productive activities. Finally, future researchers are encouraged to further explore this topic to enhance understanding and develop more effective intervention strategies.
