This study examines the correlation between poverty and the increasing crime rates in Barangay Batasan Hills, Quezon City. It aims to analyze how socio-economic factors such as education, livelihood programs, and economic opportunities influence residents' involvement in criminal activities. By evaluating demographic profiles and identifying prevalent community challenges, the research seeks to propose effective measures to mitigate crime despite existing poverty. Demographic Analysis: To profile respondents based on age, sex, civil status, educational attainment, and estimated daily budget. Assessment of Community Programs: To evaluate residents' perceptions of educational initiatives, livelihood programs, and economic opportunities provided by local authorities. Identification of Challenges: To document the primary issues faced by residents that may contribute to criminal behavior. Development of Recommendations: To propose actionable measures aimed at reducing crime rates through community engagement and resource optimization. This study employs a descriptive research design to systematically observe and describe the characteristics of the target populations without manipulating the study environment. This design is particularly effective for understanding the existing conditions and behaviors of the groups under investigation. Sampling Technique A purposive sampling technique is utilized to select participants who meet specific criteria relevant to the research objectives. This non-probability sampling method ensures that the sample aligns with the study's focus on particular demographic and professional groups. Population and Sample The study focuses on three distinct groups within Batasan Hills, Quezon City: Residents from Poverty-Stricken Communities: Twenty individuals residing in areas identified as economically disadvantaged. Residents from Above-Poverty Communities: Twenty individuals living in communities with socioeconomic status above the poverty line. Registered Criminologists: Twenty professionals who are registered criminologists practicing in the area. A total of sixty respondents are selected to provide a comprehensive perspective across these groups. Data Collection Procedures Prior to data collection, formal permission is obtained from the barangay officials of Batasan Hills to ensure ethical compliance and community cooperation. Researchers then distribute structured questionnaires tailored to each group, designed to gather relevant data on their experiences and perspectives. The purpose of the study is clearly communicated to all participants, emphasizing transparency and informed consent. Ethical Considerations The study adheres to ethical standards by ensuring voluntary participation, informed consent, and confidentiality of respondents' information. Researchers are committed to minimizing any potential discomfort or bias during data collection. Data Analysis Upon collection, data from the questionnaires are systematically organized and analyzed to identify patterns, correlations, and insights pertinent to the research objectives. The analysis aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the perspectives and experiences of each group, facilitating meaningful comparisons and conclusions. This methodology ensures a structured and ethical approach to examining the research question, providing reliable and valid results that contribute to the existing body of knowledge. The findings indicate that 80% of respondents—48 out of 60—identified exposure to violent and criminal activities during youth as the most significant problem associated with their environments. This observation aligns with existing research highlighting the correlation between early exposure to violence and an increased likelihood of engaging in criminal behavior later in life. Children exposed to violence, whether as victims or witnesses, are at a higher risk of experiencing long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Such exposure can limit their potential and increase their likelihood of becoming involved in the juvenile or criminal justice system. For instance, research has found that adult criminal and violent behavior was linked to exposure to television violence 15 years prior. PubMed Central Addressing these challenges necessitates comprehensive strategies focused on improving socio-economic conditions, providing mental health support, and creating safe, supportive environments for youth. Such measures are essential to mitigate the adverse effects of exposure to violence and reduce the propensity for future criminal involvement. The researchers propose the following recommendations to alleviate poverty in Batasan Hills, Quezon City: 1. Educational Seminars on Discrimination and Rights Advocacy Organizing seminars that address discrimination and empower individuals to advocate for their rights can play a pivotal role in poverty reduction. Education equips individuals with knowledge and skills, enhancing their employability and fostering social stability. Vocational and skills training programs, for instance, aim to build a strong labor force by preparing individuals for specific occupations, often leading to better job opportunities and higher pay. 2. Vocational Training and Livelihood Programs Implementing livelihood programs that include vocational training can significantly impact poverty alleviation. Vocational education serves as a powerful tool for job creation and sustainable development by providing individuals with marketable skills. Studies have shown that vocational training enhances employability and income levels, thereby reducing poverty rates. In Quezon City, there is a need to create pathways that enable low-income residents, especially the youth, to improve their skills and contribute to the city's economy. projects.citiesalliance.org 3. Government Policies Supporting Business Compliance The recommendation for the government to focus on legislation that ensures businesses comply with regulations is crucial. Policies that encourage businesses to adhere to labor laws and provide fair wages can foster job creation and economic growth. Improving the efficiency of regulatory systems can help businesses comply with rules in a less costly and time-consuming manner, promoting investment and job creation. In summary, focusing on education, vocational training, and supportive government policies are well-established strategies for poverty reduction. These measures aim to empower individuals, enhance employability, and stimulate economic growth, thereby improving the livelihoods of residents in Batasan Hills, Quezon City.
