Abstract

This study examines the growing prevalence of gang wars, delving into the rise of organized criminal activities. It provides an in-depth analysis of various factors such as socioeconomic conditions, cultural influences, and the role of law enforcement in addressing this issue. Understanding the underlying causes and consequences of gang involvement is essential for developing effective preventive measures and interventions. The study aims to guide individuals away from criminal behavior and contribute to creating safer and more resilient communities. A total of fifty (50) respondents were selected for the study using purposive sampling. The participants included twenty (20) residents from Barangay Bagong Silang, Caloocan City, ten (10) police officers, and twenty (20) barangay officials. A survey questionnaire served as the primary data collection instrument. The data collected were analyzed using percentage and weighted mean to evaluate the results. Based on the analysis, most respondents are between 34 and 41 years old, with a predominance of males. The majority have completed high school and are single. Most respondents belong to the middle class in terms of socioeconomic status. Respondents expressed concern over the increasing cases of gang violence in Barangay Bagong Silang, Caloocan City. When it comes to the issue of lack of parental guidance, many respondents indicated that neglect or abuse at home can lead individuals to seek belonging and acceptance outside the family, which may draw them into gangs. In terms of peer pressure, a significant number of respondents noted that gangs often provide a strong sense of belonging and social identity, making them appealing to youth facing social pressures. Additionally, respondents pointed out that communities with high levels of poverty and limited economic opportunities can foster environments where gang activity thrives. Curiosity also plays a role; respondents indicated that an interest in the unknown, combined with a desire for belonging and identity, can drive some youth to explore alternative social groups, including gangs. Many respondents highlighted that the pervasive threat of violence creates a constant state of fear and anxiety, negatively impacting the mental health and well-being of residents.

To address these issues, respondents suggested that interventions should ensure law enforcement officers receive comprehensive training in de-escalation techniques, tactical maneuvers, and effective responses to high-risk situations. Additionally, it is important to provide them with up-to-date protective equipment such as body armor and ballistic shields. Based on the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations are provided:

1. **Lack of Parental Guidance**: Seek assistance and support from reliable individuals such as family friends, teachers, or counselors, as this can be beneficial.

2. **Peer Pressure**: Surround yourself with friends who support and respect your decisions, rather than those who might negatively influence you.

3. **Environmental Influence**: To prevent individuals from joining gangs, fund community initiatives that provide opportunities for training, employment, and skill development.

4. **Curiosity**: Encourage youth to explore a variety of interests and engage in new experiences.

5. **Identifying At-Risk Individuals**: Conduct risk assessments to identify individuals who may be at risk of joining a gang. Then, design interventions tailored to their unique needs, such as counseling, vocational training, or mentorship programs.

6. **Proposed Interventions**: Create community-based initiatives that divert young people from gang involvement by engaging them in positive activities like sports, the arts, and vocational training. Empower elders and community leaders to serve as mentors and positive role models.
