Abstract

Traffic refers to the movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and other forms of transportation within designated roadways and highways. Effective traffic management involves strategies aimed at ensuring safety and efficiency. However, traffic accidents continue to pose serious challenges, often resulting in property damage, injuries, or fatalities. Along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, often referred to as one of the country’s most accident-prone roads, the incidence of highway accidents has raised public concern. This study aims to identify and analyze the factors contributing to these accidents as a basis for improving traffic safety measures in the area. This study uses a quantitative descriptive research design to assess the contributing factors to highway accidents along Commonwealth Avenue. A total of 70 respondents participated, consisting of 20 traffic enforcers and 50 drivers regularly operating in the area. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling, focusing on individuals with direct knowledge or experience of road conditions and traffic incidents. Data were collected using a researcher-made survey questionnaire that underwent validation prior to distribution. Findings revealed that respondents agreed on several key contributors to highway accidents. Environmental factors such as road damage and potholes were frequently cited. Driver-related issues, especially distracted driving and overspeeding, were also identified as major risks. Mechanical issues, including tire defects, and the absence of clear traffic signage particularly warning signs for hazardous zones were additional contributing factors. Among all, overspeeding emerged as the most prevalent cause. Respondents strongly recommended regular road repairs and maintenance as crucial steps to reducing accident frequency along the highway. To mitigate traffic accidents along Commonwealth Avenue, the study recommends stricter enforcement of speed limits, enhancement of road infrastructure, and consistent road maintenance. Local government units and traffic enforcement agencies should collaborate in implementing safety campaigns, reinforcing traffic laws, and upgrading road signage. Furthermore, transport operators and drivers must be educated on responsible driving practices to promote a culture of road safety.
