Abstract

One of the most difficult subjects is mathematics. We conducted this study to assess the problem-solving skills in General Math subject of grade 12 General Academic Strand students. The students were guided by accurate variables such as analysis, formula application, and computation that they can use and apply in solving math problems. Quantitative-descriptive research was used as the research method for the study. We used purposive sampling to select respondents from grade 12 General Academic Strand students. The results showed that male respondents got the weighted mean of 4.16, and female respondents got the weighted mean of 3.99, both strongly agree as verbal interpretation in terms of analysis. In formula application, male respondents obtained a weighted mean of 4.75, and female respondents had a weighted mean of 3.67, both of which were interpreted as strongly agree. Lastly, for computation, male respondents obtained a weighted mean of 4.40, and female respondents got a weighted mean of 4.23, both of which were interpreted as strongly agree. The overall weighted mean was 4.44 for male respondents and 4.19 for female respondents, both of which were interpreted as strongly agree. The discussion can be used as the guidelines by the two groups of respondents. The students must give more attention to problem-solving skills in the General Math subject to clearly understand the problem given by the teacher. The students need to manage their time in all subjects, especially in mathematics. Students should listen to the teacher who discusses the formula and equation carefully to answer the given problem. The students should also value General Math as a major subject, including their problem-solving skills, equation, and formulas. They should also focus on the lesson to understand the formula and the process to reach the solution. The students should also memorize common numbers to allow mental calculation. Then, they should take note of essential topics that may help recognize or remember the previous topic, use checking methods to assure that their answer is correct, and ask the teacher if they do not understand something.
