Effects of Lecture Method to Teach Mathematics on Academic Performance of Grade 12 General Academic Strand Students in Bestlink College of the Philippines, S.Y. 2019–2020

Abstract

A lecture is the most commonly used method of teachers in teaching; in a lecture, teachers are explaining the topic to the students, with the teachers being active while the students are passive. This study was conducted to know the effects of the lecture method on students. This quantitative research aimed to determine the relationship between male and female respondents in a population. This study used the descriptive method to determine the effects of the lecture method on teaching Mathematics to the students. Purposive sampling was utilized to choose Grade 12 General Academic Strand students to assess the effects of the lecture method in teaching Mathematics. The results of the study showed that with the weighted means of 3.55 for male respondents and 3.72 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that written works affected the academic performance of the students by using the lecture method. With the weighted means of 3.64 for male respondents and 3.71 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that the lecture method affected the academic performance of the students in terms of performance skills. Lastly, with the computed weighted means of 3.67 for male respondents and 3.84 for female respondents, both groups of respondents strongly agreed that the lecture method affected the academic performance of the students in terms of behavior. With the overall weighted means of 3.62 for male respondents and 3.75 for female respondents, both groups strongly agreed that the lecture method has an effect on the academic performance of the students in terms of the indicated variables. Based on the findings of the study and the conclusions that were drawn, the recommendations are as follow: teachers should choose the lecture method as their teaching strategy in teaching Mathematics to have further and clearer discussions and help the students who have difficulties on the subject of Mathematics.
