Abstract

This study explores the development of an erasable marker ink made from organic materials. The red beetroot (Beta vulgaris) contains betalains, which serve as natural red colorants and have significant potential as an ink ingredient. The growing demand for sustainable alternatives to synthetic inks motivated this research. By utilizing beetroot, aloe vera, and gum arabic powder, the study aims to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly writing and drawing materials. This study employed a quantitative-descriptive research design. The participants included eight (8) STEM teachers and ten (10) Science teachers, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using a survey questionnaire, and statistical tools such as frequency and percentage, weighted mean, and t-test were used to analyze the results. The study found the whiteboard marker ink to be "Highly Acceptable" in terms of ingredients, ink intensity, erasability, odor, toxicity, and presentation. The overall weighted mean for STEM teachers was 3.61 with a variance of 0.052, a t-computed value of 1.1859, and a t-critical value of 2.120 (α = 0.05). Science teachers obtained a mean score of 3.43, a variance of 0.156, and the same t-computed and t-critical values. Since the t-computed value was lower than the t-critical value, there was no significant difference between the assessments of the two groups. The positive responses suggest a high potential for the widespread acceptance of this organic ink alternative. Based on the results, several recommendations emerged. First, purchasing beetroot in bulk and negotiating with suppliers could reduce costs. Enhancing solubility through alternative solvents may improve application and erasability. Maintaining a neutral pH level by using a suitable binder is essential for ink stability. Addressing the strong odor of natural pigments and minimizing heat exposure can improve user experience. Lastly, optimizing the marker design for consistent ink flow and providing clear usage instructions will enhance the practicality of beetroot, aloe vera, and gum arabic as whiteboard marker ink.
