Abstract

This study examines the impact of traffic congestion on local tourists in Intramuros, Manila, serving as a basis for an intervention program. Using a descriptive research method, data were gathered from 50 local tourists to identify the challenges they encounter.  The study highlights key issues such as:  Limited parking spaces Overcrowding, including street vendors Adverse weather conditions (e.g., flooding) Road maintenance and closures Lack of bicycle-friendly and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure Presence of informal settlements Safety concerns and accidents Among these, parking limitations and overcrowding were identified as the most pressing concerns. The findings will help guide the development of strategies to enhance accessibility, safety, and overall tourist experience in Intramuros. The unexpected surge in traffic congestion across many areas stems from multiple factors. The primary cause is population growth, leading to a significant increase in vehicles on the road. Other contributing factors include inadequate infrastructure, poor traffic management, construction work zones, special events, emergencies, and excessive demand.  In Manila, traffic congestion remains a pressing urban issue, largely due to ineffective urban and transport planning, further worsening mobility and daily commutes. For decades, the Philippine government has tackled traffic congestion by building bypass roads and tollways to reduce travel time. Common strategies include road construction and widening to ease congestion. However, promoting non-motorized transportation, such as walking, remains an overlooked yet viable solution for improving mobility and sustainability. his study proposes an Intervention Program to mitigate traffic congestion in Manila City by offering strategic solutions and recommendations. By implementing this program, the city is expected to see significant improvements in traffic flow. The study highlights the importance of proactive measures in reducing congestion’s negative impact on residents and promoting sustainable urban development.
