Abstract

Hair-related issues, particularly those affecting hair growth, have been a persistent concern worldwide, including in the Philippines. One potential solution to address this problem is the development of herbal-based shampoos that promote hair growth while minimizing the use of synthetic chemicals.

Shampoo is an essential hair care product designed to cleanse both the hair and scalp. In addition to cleaning, it can contain conditioning and medicinal components that help maintain and improve hair health. Incorporating natural ingredients such as ginger and coconut oil extract into shampoo formulations may enhance hair growth. These herbal supplements are known for their beneficial properties—ginger is believed to stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, while coconut oil deeply nourishes and strengthens hair. By leveraging these natural ingredients, an herbal shampoo could serve as a more sustainable and effective alternative for promoting healthier hair growth. This study employed a quantitative-experimental research method using a snowball sampling technique. A questionnaire was utilized as the research instrument to assess the acceptability of the proposed shampoo formulation based on key factors, including ingredients, product consistency, safety, hair growth effectiveness, and presentation. To analyze the data, frequency and percentage, rating scale, weighted mean, and t-test were applied to compare the assessments of two groups of respondents and determine any significant differences in their evaluations. The results of the study indicate that the proposed shampoo formulation was deemed "Acceptable" in terms of its ingredients, product consistency, safety, hair growth effectiveness, and presentation. The overall weighted mean rating given by dermatologists was 2.68, with a variance of 0.039, a t-computed value of 2.306, a degree of freedom (df) of 13, and a t-critical value of 2.160 at α = 0.05. Meanwhile, chemical engineers provided an overall weighted mean of 2.87, with a variance of 0.120, a t-computed value of 2.306, a degree of freedom (df) of 13, and a t-critical value of 2.160 at α = 0.05.

Since the t-computed values do not exceed the t-critical value, the null hypothesis is accepted, indicating no significant difference between the assessments of the two groups of respondents. To further improve the project, the recommended enhancements have been prioritized. Implementing these recommendations will help refine the safety, product consistency, hair growth effectiveness, and presentation of the herbal shampoo, ensuring that these factors no longer pose challenges to its development.
