Abstract

In this day and age, information about violence inside overcrowded correctional facilities is commonly reported. This long-standing issue seems endless and may weaken the rehabilitation of offenders. This study aimed to determine the basis for preventing aggressive behavior among overcrowded PDLs in Caloocan City Jail. The respondents of the study were 10 jail officers and 40 Persons Deprived of Liberty from Caloocan City Jail. The sampling technique utilized by the researchers was purposive sampling. This study used quantitative methods, particularly descriptive research design. The researchers requested permission from the head of Caloocan City Jail to conduct the survey. Prior to the survey, the researchers asked the consent of the target respondents to complete the survey questionnaires. They waited until the respondents finished answering the survey. Upon completion, the researchers collected the questionnaires and interpreted the given information. The respondents were assured by the researchers that the information gathered would be kept confidential. The highest weighted mean in terms of Personal Factors was “Strong self-control helps PDLs to better control their behavior despite overcrowding.” In terms of Situational Factors, it was “The lack of privacy and space caused by overcrowding makes PDLs more likely to act aggressively.” In Cognitive Processes, it was “PDLs frequently perceive confrontational situations as personal attacks, which can lead to aggressiveness.” Lastly, in terms of Affective States, it was “Prisoners who feel helpless or trapped in their situation are prone to react aggressively.” Persons Deprived of Liberty and their families should be aware of their anger, learn healthy coping mechanisms, and settle disagreements peacefully to avoid conflict escalation. To lessen frustration and provide emotional support, they need to develop stronger relationships with their peers.
