This chapter presents the background of the study, a review of related literature and studies, the theoretical and conceptual frameworks, the statement of the problem, the scope and delimitations of the study, the significance of the study, and the definition of key terms. Modern crime scene investigations increasingly rely on digital forensics, reflecting the growing use of technology and the internet for both criminal and personal purposes. For the Philippine National Police (PNP), digital forensics has become a critical component of criminal investigations, particularly at Camp Crame, the PNP's national headquarters. This study employs a descriptive quantitative research design through the use of surveys. It aims to determine the extent to which key variables are related to the effectiveness of digital forensics in crime scene investigation. The survey instrument underwent validation and was administered to selected respondents involved in cybercrime investigations at Camp Crame. Data were collected, organized, and statistically treated to draw conclusions about the program’s performance and areas for improvement. Findings revealed that while digital forensic practices are recognized as effective in supporting investigations, limited access to advanced forensic tools and equipment remains a major challenge. Respondents emphasized the importance of leveraging reliable, free, and open-source digital forensic tools to address financial limitations without compromising the integrity of investigations. The results also highlighted a need for greater training and technical support to enhance operational capacity. The study concluded that the effectiveness of digital forensic practices at the PNP Cyber Forensic Unit can be improved through expanded access to forensic tools, enhanced officer training, and stronger institutional support. It recommends the development of an action plan aimed at equipping police officers with the necessary skills and resources to conduct efficient digital investigations. Addressing the identified barriers will significantly enhance the unit’s capability in handling technologically driven crimes and maintaining the integrity of digital evidence.
