Academic Performance of Selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students of Bestlink College of the Philippines as Influenced by Socioeconomic Factor

Abstract

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a term used by sociologists, economists, and other social scientists to describe the class standing of an individual or group. It is measured by factors including income, occupation, and education, and it can have either a positive or negative impact on a person’s life. Research indicates that students from low SES households and communities develop academic skills slower than those from high SES households that can easily provide the needs of students such as books, Internet, reading materials, etc. Socioeconomic factors highly affect one’s education in different terms, such as income level of parents. The researchers used a descriptive method of research. The researchers used a survey questionnaire to gather information from selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand students. The data gathered from the questionnaire served as the primary data, while those from the literature and previous studies were secondary. The results of the study revealed that the 90 respondents with the MWF schedule agreed that socioeconomic factors influence the academic performance of Grade 12 HUMSS students. However, most of them experience this situation not all the time. This phenomenon was shown by the following average composite weighted mean of 3.39 for projects/activities, 2.82 for attendance, and 2.52 for health issues. The researchers found out that the students of Bestlink College of the Philippines (BCP) encounter this problem rarely in their lives. The researchers found out that socioeconomic factors affect the academic performance of students in BCP rarely. Education is the best legacy a nation can give to its citizen, especially the youth because the development of any nation or community depends largely on the quality of education of its people. The researcher suggested that students should learn to spend their money well to avoid this problem and find ways to have financial control.
