Keywords:motivation, implication, academic performance
This study focused on determining the motivation of the student in our generation. Student's motivation affects every aspect of school life from attendance to academic performance. In this study, we can also determine some strategies on how they will imply the motivation in their academic performance with the use of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is referring to the behavior that is driven by an internal reward, while extrinsic motivation refers to the behavior that is driven by an external reward. Thus, motivation is a driving force that helps students to enter a setting where they value achievements. The researchers used the descriptive method to describe the motivation of the student and its implication to their academic performance. The purposive sampling technique was used in the study to select 100 Humanities and Social Sciences Strand students. The researchers utilized a survey questionnaire to gather the needed data for the study. To calculate the results, we also used percentage and weighted mean as a statistical tool. The respondents agreed that motivation affects their academic performance in terms of reward, with a total weighted mean of 4.18. In terms of punishments, the researchers agreed that motivation affects their academic performance if they will get punished by demerits in their grade, with a total weighted mean of 3.92. In terms of recognition, the respondents agreed that they will feel motivated if they will have a rank every semester. The results of this study showed that the students have different types of motivation, that is, intrinsic and extrinsic. In intrinsic motivation, students do their tasks because they want to learn without exchange. Meanwhile, in extrinsic motivation, students do their tasks because they are influenced by outside forces such as getting a high score or being on top of the class. The research may suggest that the teachers may use interesting activities to get their students’ interest and boost their self-confidence.
