Benefits of Proper Selection of Peer Group Influencing Academic Performance of Grade 12 ABM Students

Abstract

Peer is derived from the Latin word “paar,” which means equal. Peers are individuals who are equal in terms of their age, status, or skills. Teenagers are likely to refer to people around them as peers; a dyadic relationship is also called a couple. College students experience “peer pressure” in their academic performance and their community. To avoid the negative impact of peer pressure, students must address the problem of lacking self-confidence in their ordeals to avoid being pressured by his or her surroundings. This study aimed to apply the benefits of proper selection of peer groups in the academic success of Grade 12 students. The researchers used a descriptive research design. The survey method was used to gather information and collect specific information that will be used for the study. The respondents of the study were 50 Grade 12 Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM)students that were selected through simple random sampling. The benefits of the proper selection of peer groups may influence the academic performance of students in the school. It had a positive effect on the academic achievement enhance their teamwork and creativity as peers sharing knowledge in academics. Negative peer pressure was one of the problems that were encountered by Grade 12 ABM students, that is, students cannot do independent judgments and proper decision making. The researchers suggested the students choose their peers carefully, which will help them to have an appropriate conceptualization of ideas and improve their decision-making skills. Applying proper selection of peer groups also enhances the creativity of the students inside the school and teamwork, including communication skills and motivation. Peer influence causes enjoyment in academic performance.
