Abstract

Traffic congestion, which is mostly caused by market trades and daily appointments, has become a major problem in the Philippines. Many solutions have been proposed, but none has succeeded to lighten the heavy roads. Tunnels and bridges seemed to be a necessary way to make a path to success. This research was conducted to solve the problem of traffic. Although the authorities are trying to find a way to ease the traffic in Manila, this study preferred to build and develop a miniature of the Blu-Ton tunnel to determine the level of acceptability. Quantitative-experimental research was used as the research design for this study, and purposive sampling was utilized to select civil and electrical engineers as respondents. The instrument used was the questionnaire to determine whether the proposed project is acceptable in terms of construction materials, procedural methodology, project design, environmental safeness, and transport availability. The results of the study in terms of construction materials, procedural methodology, project design, environmental safeness, and transport availability were highly acceptable. This result indicated that the difference between the assessments of the two groups of respondents in terms of the cited variables was not significant. Civil engineers obtained an overall weighted mean of 3.92, which was interpreted as highly acceptable with the variance of 0.024, while electrical engineers obtained an overall weighted mean of 3.82, which was interpreted as highly acceptable with a variance of 0.0539. Both groups of respondents had a t-computed of 0.8561 and a degree of freedom of 13 with the value of 3.365. The t-computed value was lesser than the t-critical one. As a result, the assessments of the two groups of respondents are accepted. The respondents recommended the following: use more durable materials that are suitable for walls and columns of the miniature, use more guidelines and measurements that are intact and constant to the project, use illustration board for roads to be more presentable, make the tunnel more effective against hazards and disasters that may make the tunnel useless, and add more lightings and drainage systems to make it more available for transportation.
