Abstract

Sex education covers human sexuality, sexual anatomy, sexual behavior, and safe sex practices. Since knowledge is essential for everyone, many Filipinos believe that teenagers should receive sex education in schools to increase awareness about safe sex, unintended pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV. This study aims to explore students’ perspectives on sex education and assess their awareness of its importance in preventing health risks. The respondents for this study were Senior High School students from Bestlink College of the Philippines. The study targeted 331 students aged 18 and above, using simple random sampling to ensure unbiased selection. This method allowed the researchers to gather representative data and draw accurate conclusions about the knowledge preferences of students regarding sex education as an elective subject. The majority of respondents were between the ages of 18 and 20. Most agreed that sex education plays a crucial role in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. The inclusion of sex education in school curricula remains a topic of debate, focusing on its appropriateness, necessity, and impact on students’ attitudes and behaviors. Some consider sex a sensitive subject, particularly in an academic setting. However, by broadening perspectives on sexual health education, it becomes evident that early knowledge is vital in promoting awareness and responsible decision-making.
