DRUG ADDICTION AS A CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THE INCREASING CRIME RATE AT BARANGAY COMMONWEALTH, QUEZON CITY

Abstract

Drug addiction is a chronic condition that affects the brain and behavior, leading to significant consequences for both individuals and communities. People may start abusing drugs for various reasons, including peer pressure and personal struggles. In Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City, the respondents assessed the impact of drug addiction on the rising crime rate, considering factors such as age, sex, and civil status. The study also identifies the challenges faced by individuals struggling with drug addiction in the area and proposes possible solutions to mitigate the problem and reduce its negative effects on the community. This study will adopt a Descriptive Research Design to achieve its primary objective. The researchers will use a Purposive Sampling Technique to select fifty (50) respondents, comprising thirty (30) residents (both male and female), ten (10) Barangay officials, and ten (10) police officers. A set of well-prepared questions will be provided to the respondents, ensuring they respond accurately and honestly to gather the essential data for the study. The study findings reveal that most respondents "Strongly Agree" that individuals are often influenced by their peers to engage in substance abuse and criminal activities as a means of fitting in or belonging to a specific group. The study finds that the majority of respondents "Strongly Agree" that individuals may be influenced by their peers to engage in substance abuse and criminal activities in order to fit in or belong to a particular group. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend the following actions to reduce the crime rate in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City:  Promote counseling services to address criminal behavior, especially for individuals affected by drug dependency. Strengthen the community support system for those recovering from drug addiction. Implement rehabilitation programs for individuals who have committed crimes related to drug addiction. Provide accessible, affordable, and comprehensive treatment options for individuals struggling with drug addiction. These initiatives are aimed at addressing the root causes of drug addiction and crime, ultimately contributing to a safer and healthier community in Barangay Commonwealth.
