Abstract

This study aims to explore the implications of commercialization on the long-term preservation of Intramuros as a prominent tourist destination. It emphasizes the positive economic impact experienced by communities that recognize the benefits of proactive planning for conservation. The research underscores the importance of maintaining Intramuros' historical value, ensuring that its Philippine-Spanish architectural style, dating from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, is preserved amid commercial development. The researcher will employ a mixed-methods design for this study, integrating both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Quantitative data will be gathered through surveys and questionnaires to evaluate the implications of commercialization on cultural preservation, identify challenges in preserving historical landmarks, and explore how commercialization influences cultural heritage conservation. The study will involve 10 local residents, 10 local tourists, and 10 local authorities from Intramuros, utilizing surveys and questionnaires to gather comprehensive insights from each group. The results of this study suggest that commercialization plays a vital role in the preservation of historical landmarks while offering economic benefits. A number of respondents agreed that commercialization influences the preservation of historical landmarks in terms of the economy, infrastructure, and employment. Additionally, commercialization appears to have a positive impact on the economy, with significant agreement that it encourages cultural exchange and understanding between diverse communities. This indicates that the economic advantages of heritage sites are being successfully realized. This study recommends fostering greater community involvement in heritage preservation efforts. Local communities often have a strong emotional and cultural connection to historic landmarks, and their insights can be crucial in the preservation process. By allowing community members to participate actively, provide feedback, and share their knowledge about the cultural significance of these landmarks, the preservation efforts can be more effective. Additionally, since funding has been identified as a significant challenge in preserving historic landmarks, it is vital to allocate more financial resources to support cultural preservation initiatives. This approach would ensure the sustainable conservation of heritage sites for future generations.
