Abstract

This study explores the shift from a hazard-centered disaster paradigm to one that prioritizes vulnerability and resilience in understanding natural disasters. While natural hazards were once seen as purely external threats, modern perspectives emphasize the role of socioeconomic factors in shaping disaster outcomes. However, the theoretical and empirical measures of vulnerability and resilience remain subjects of debate. This review of economic literature aims to summarize advancements in defining and assessing the economic dimensions of vulnerability and resilience to natural hazards. Additionally, it provides policymakers with valuable insights to enhance disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and economic recovery strategies. This study employs purposive sampling to ensure participants have firsthand experience with disruptions caused by natural hazards, including hurricanes, earthquakes, and typhoons. By selecting a diverse group across age, gender, and geographic location, the research enhances its validity. The study focuses on the economic impact of typhoons on the airline industry, analyzing costs incurred by airlines, passengers, and airports, as well as broader economic consequences. Additionally, it evaluates existing mitigation strategies such as disaster response plans, insurance policies, emergency funds, and risk management approaches. The research aims to identify new strategies to minimize financial losses and enhance the industry's resilience against future typhoon-related disruptions. This study aims to empirically assess the economic impact of typhoons on the airline industry, examining direct costs incurred by airlines, passengers, and airports, as well as the indirect effects on the broader economy. It will evaluate the effectiveness of existing mitigation strategies, including disaster response plans, insurance policies, emergency funds, and risk management approaches. Additionally, the study seeks to identify new strategies to reduce financial losses and enhance industry resilience against future typhoon-related disruptions. This study examines the significant economic impact of natural hazards, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes, on the airline industry. By analyzing trends, issues, and challenges, the research aims to identify key problems faced by the industry and propose effective solutions. Through an empirical approach, the study evaluates the extent of financial losses and assesses strategies to enhance resilience and mitigate future disruptions.
