Abstract

First-year criminology students often encounter unique challenges as they navigate the demands of higher education alongside part-time or full-time employment. Managing the dual responsibilities of work and study can affect their academic success, mental well-being, and overall college experience. Given the intensive and emotionally challenging nature of criminology, it is essential to understand how working impacts these students. This study aims to examine the experiences, coping mechanisms, and academic performance of first-year criminology students who work while studying. By identifying key stressors and support systems, the research intends to guide institutions in providing better assistance to students balancing both roles. This study utilized a quantitative research approach, selecting fifty (50) participants from the Department of Criminology at Bestlink College of the Philippines to take part in the research. The findings indicate that most students perceive working while studying as having a significant effect on their academic performance. This study emphasizes the need for effective strategies to manage the dual responsibilities of work and education, enabling students to enhance their academic engagement and overall success. Teachers are encouraged to support Criminology students in balancing their work and academic responsibilities effectively. This study seeks to help students develop better time management skills to successfully fulfill both their employment and academic obligations.
