Abstract

This study aims to identify the effects of online dating applications on self-realization among LGBTQIA+ students of Bestlink College of the Philippines in terms of age, gender identity, and application usage. This study utilized descriptive quantitative research. The participants of this study are fifty (100) LGBTQIA+ students in Bestlink College of the Philippines.

Based on the results of the study reveal that the majority of the respondents are Gay between the ages of 21 and 23 years and have Tinder as the most used online dating application. The results reveal that (45%) of the respondents answered “I am single” before using the apps, (35%) answered “I am dating someone” while actively using the app, and (53%) answered “I am in a relationship” after they used the app. Therefore, it can be concluded that online dating applications become the venue for creating relationships or for finding one. From the results, it has been revealed that the majority of the respondents answered “Agree” about the problem of spending most of their time on online dating applications, and it ranks number 1 in the problems listed in the questionnaire. Placed in rank two and “Strongly Agree” on the problems that the respondents encountered in using online dating applications is the experience of receiving disrespectful words while they were using online dating applications.

Overall, the researchers recommend all possible involved departments and organizations to conduct seminars and workshops to address the discrimination, anxiety, and misuse of online dating applications and the data stored on them. And to read available articles, books, and research that will help the respondents enhance their self-realization and cope with the problems revealed in this study.
