Abstract

This action research project aims to promote reading habits among Grade 12 students, especially among the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) Strand students, in Bestlink College of the Philippines by providing a book and improvised bookshelves inside the classroom. Recently, the researchers observed that most of the students engage more in their gadgets and gather academic information in their academic tasks through the Internet without proof of validation. The books and improvised bookshelves were designed to motivate to students to read and explore information in books. The researchers used a quasi-experimental research design. The researchers choose two grade 12 sections in ABM, that is, sections 02 and 04 in the MWF schedule. A total of 49 students were selected in ABM 12-02 as the experimental group, while 46 selected students in ABM 12-04 as the control group, with a total of 95 respondents that were chosen through quota sampling. Based on the results of the study, providing improvised bookshelves with books improved the reading habit ofGrade 12 ABM students and had a significant difference in the benefits acquired by ABM 12-02 students with improvised bookshelves and books and ABM 12-04 students without improvised bookshelves and books in terms of (1) content of the books (students benefited in reading books that contain topics related to their subjects, which widens their creativity and knowledge), (2) relevance of the books (students benefited in reading books that are related in the field of studies sharpens their knowledge about business process and business terminologies), and (3) usefulness of books (students benefited in reading books that are useful in their academics, those that help them in answering their assignments and projects, and those that are useful in their research studies). These benefits improved the academic performance of the student. The study suggested that student should improve their reading habits by reading books daily. Teachers should also encourage their students to read books. School administrators must conduct an assessment of the level of reading comprehension of the students to help them develop their academic performances. Future researchers must improve the action plan provided in this study.
