Abstract

Role-playing is changing one’s behavior to assume a role, either unconsciously to fill a social role or consciously to act out an adopted role. Role-playing is a learning structure that allows students to assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. The joy of role-playing is that students can become anyone for a short time. This technique is an excellent tool for engaging students and allowing them to interact with their classmates as they attempt to complete the specific role assigned to them. Students are more engaged as they attempt to respond to the material from the perspective of their character. In this study, the researchers recognize that there are challenges that they may encounter in a role-playing activity. In this research, the researchers used a quantitative method on which numeric figures or numbers can be based and a descriptive method to describe the characteristics of a phenomenon population being studied. The survey questionnaire administered to 50Grade 12 Performing Arts students underwent purposive sampling where a student has an equal chance to be chosen as a sample. The survey questionnaire was constructed to determine the challengesencountered in the role-playing activity in terms of the confidence, skills, and talents of the students. Based on the table, male respondents had a weighted mean of 4.44, and female respondents had a weighted mean of 4.20, which both strongly agree that building one's confidence is one of the challenges. Based on the table, male respondents had a weighted mean of 4.03, and female respondents had a weighted mean of 4.25, which both strongly agree that skills are also one of the challenges. Lastly, male respondents had a weighted mean of 4.28, and female respondents had a weighted mean of 4.16, which both strongly agree that talents are also one of the challenges. Male respondents had an overall weighted mean of 4.25, and female respondents had an overall weighted mean of 4.20, which both strongly agreed that confidence, skills, and talent are the challenges encountered in a role-playing activity. Based on the findings of the study and the conclusions are drawn, the following should be considered: the students should have the willingness to work cooperatively, focus on technicalities in production, enhance the voices and sound curiosity, learn techniques in terms of role-playing, practice grammar for them to create a good script for the characters, learn how to meditate and absorb the emotion of the characters, be financially ready for the role-playing activity, be picky in choosing a music background and theme for the play, be comfortable in sharing their thoughts and suggestions in the class, and learn how to make the play pleasing to every audience.
