Abstract

This research focused on the effects of the English subject on the vocabulary of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand students. Vocabulary development is the process of a person increasing the number of words that he or she uses in everyday life. The students must enhance their vocabulary development to know many unfamiliar words and express themselves in a concise and precise way. This study used a qualitative method of research to determine the effects of the English subject on the vocabulary development of Grade 12 HUMSS Strand students in Bestlink College of the Philippines. The researchers administered survey questionnaires to gather information from selected Grade 12 HUMSS Strand students. A purposive sampling technique was utilized in choosing 100 respondents. Based on the conducted research, this study revealed that the effects of the English subject on the vocabulary development of Grade 12 HUMSS Strand students involved speaking, writing, and understanding based on the answer of 100 respondents, with an average weighted mean of 3.85, which was interpreted as strongly agree. Grade 12 students, especially in HUMSS, have encountered many problems in the English subject. The effects of English subject on the vocabulary development of Grade 12 HUMSS Strand students in terms of speaking, writing, and understanding also showed that the students were indigent in terms of English subject because their vocabulary was limited. The researchers recommended reading books to enhance their vocabulary development.
