Abstract

Illegal gambling is a growing global concern that has numerous negative effects on both individuals and society as a whole. People may experience significant losses, including their possessions and jobs, as a result of gambling addiction. Those who participate in illegal gambling are at an increased risk of developing a dependency on this behavior. The consequences can be severe, impacting not only the individuals involved but also their families, leading to serious personal and financial difficulties. This study aims to investigate alternative leisure activities for individuals engaged in illegal gambling, with the goal of diminishing their interest in such practices. The research will focus on the effects of gambling on individuals, emphasizing that it can become an addiction similar to substance abuse when pursued compulsively or when individuals feel a lack of control. Furthermore, this study will explore the detection and enforcement strategies utilized by the Quezon City Police District, particularly Station 13, in their efforts to combat illegal gambling. This research includes the study design, participant identification, sampling method employed, development of the research instrument, validation of that instrument, data administration and collection, as well as the statistical analysis of the findings. The majority of survey respondents were male, aged between 34 and 41. Participants from the groups of Police Officers, Detainees, and Community Residents expressed strong agreement regarding the effectiveness of the detection and apprehension strategies employed by Station 13 of the Quezon City Police District in addressing illegal gambling, particularly in the areas of Awareness, Patrolling, and Intelligence Gathering. Among the various indicators assessed, the statement "Law enforcement agencies actively engaged in intelligence gathering to identify and dismantle illegal gambling operations" received the lowest weighted mean. Respondents primarily noted that "Police officers encounter difficulties due to a lack of transparency and accountability in illegal gambling operations." The leading recommendation for improvement was that "Collaboration among government agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations can significantly enhance the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at combating illegal gambling." The Quezon City Police District, Station 13, should launch public awareness campaigns to educate the community about the risks and consequences of illegal gambling, while also promoting the support services available for those struggling with gambling addiction.
