Abstract

This chapter discusses the growing prevalence and easy access to social media, which has contributed to cyberbullying among young people, including students at Bagong Silangan High School. The anonymity of digital platforms makes it difficult to identify and hold perpetrators accountable. Cyberbullying affects victims in multiple areas of their lives, including academic performance, social interactions, and personal relationships. The chapter also highlights how a lack of guidance and discipline online can influence students’ social and academic well-being. This study employs a descriptive method, as defined by Shona M. (2020), to systematically examine the effects of cyberbullying on students at Bagong Silangan High School. A total of fifty (50) students were surveyed using systematic sampling to ensure a representative sample while maintaining the benefits of randomization. The study aims to provide insights into the emotional and academic impact of cyberbullying on the student population. The respondents included 25 male and 25 female students aged 14–19, with 46% aged 14–15 and 46% aged 16–17. Psychological effects of cyberbullying had a composite mean of 2.63 ("Agree"), with increased symptoms of depression and anxiety scoring 2.58 ("Strongly Agree"). Emotional effects scored a mean of 2.73, notably overthinking social interactions (2.84). Sociological effects had a mean of 2.74, reflecting increased secrecy about digital lives. Respondents emphasized victim empowerment strategies, such as blocking cyberbullies, and advocated preventive approaches based on empathy, like treating others as one would like to be treated. The study examines the effects of cyberbullying on students at Bagong Silangan High School, considering factors such as age, sex, educational attainment, and social context. Using a descriptive research approach, the researchers aim to understand the causes and consequences of cyberbullying and to promote awareness and strategies that help students cope with these challenges.
