Abstract

Peer relationships significantly influence the behaviors and decisions of children, especially those in conflict with the law. Understanding mechanisms such as the delinquency spiral, peer contagion, and the effects of peer rejection is crucial for developing interventions aimed at mitigating delinquent behaviors among youth. The study employed a descriptive research design, utilizing purposive sampling to select participants from key community sectors. A total of fifteen (15) police officers, fifteen (15) barangay personnel, fifteen (15) community members, and five (5) Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) staff were chosen to provide comprehensive insights into the research focus.. The study conducted in Barangay 173, Caloocan City, highlights the significant role of peer influence in shaping the behaviors of children in conflict with the law. Factors such as rapid urbanization, poverty, limited educational opportunities, and exposure to various forms of media contribute to the peer interactions of Filipino youth. The prevalence of gang involvement in certain communities further amplifies the impact of peer influence on delinquent behaviors. Addressing juvenile delinquency requires a collaborative approach involving barangay officials, law enforcement, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Recognizing the significant impact of peer relationships on youth behavior, implementing programs that foster positive peer interactions, build essential life skills, and offer alternative avenues for social fulfillment can effectively divert youth from delinquent paths.
