Abstract

This study examines the significance of possessing diverse skills in the hospitality sector, where continuous learning and adaptability are crucial for success. It highlights the challenges students face in aligning their skills with industry demands, particularly during a significant shortage of workers. The study explores the relationship between career preferences and skill enhancement among fourth-year BSHM students at Bestlink College, aiming to shed light on how to navigate shifting career paths and the impact on skill-enhancement initiatives. Additionally, it investigates the effects of the pandemic on programs designed to improve skills and underscores the importance of strategic career planning in achieving personal fulfillment. Using a mixed-method approach, this study examined the topic of fourth-year Bestlink College of the Philippines Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management students. A probability sampling technique called simple random sampling was used to choose a sample of 100 students. Research instruments included survey questionnaires with scaled questions. Between 20 and 22, 64% of the respondents were female and part of the program. The purpose of the study was to comprehend the viewpoints and experiences of the students. According to the study, participating in course laboratories, seminars, and demonstrations helps students gain practical skills. Although family support is also helpful, students frequently require more real-world experience in practical settings. The primary means by which BSHM students develop complex skills—namely, the ability to identify their hard skills and gain helpful knowledge—is through seminars. With a mean of 3.36, genetic inheritance has the most minor significant influence on developing hard skills. However, 18.21% of participants require more hands-on experience because they lack sufficient practical application or evaluation expertise and require specialized knowledge and skills. Students can apply their knowledge in a laboratory through practical, hands-on opportunities offered by course laboratories and demonstrations. The researcher recommends implementing skill development and structured training programs to foster personal growth and continuous learning. Professionally conducted programs provide in-depth experiences and engaging discussions that enhance participants' professional abilities and better prepare them for the workforce of the future. Skill development is a crucial component of any training program.
