Abstract

Developing proficient writing skills is essential in language learning, encompassing the ability to compose narratives, descriptions, expository texts, and arguments. For learners, especially those studying a foreign language, producing coherent and extended pieces of writing presents significant challenges. The study investigating common errors in essay writing among senior high school General Academic Strand (GAS) teachers at Bestlink College of the Philippines, you employed a purposive sampling technique to select five participants. Purposive sampling, also known as judgmental or selective sampling, is a non-probability method where researchers intentionally choose individuals based on specific characteristics relevant to the research objectives. This approach allows for in-depth exploration of particular areas of interest within a targeted group. ​ study offers valuable insights into the challenges faced by senior high school General Academic Strand (GAS) teachers at Bestlink College of the Philippines concerning essay writing among students. Identifying common errors and proposing targeted strategies are essential steps toward enhancing students' writing proficiency.​  Identified Common Errors:  The study highlights several prevalent issues in student essays:​  Blunders: These encompass a range of mistakes, including factual inaccuracies or misinterpretations.​  Plagiarism: Presenting others' work or ideas as one's own without proper attribution.​  Straying from the Topic: Deviating from the main subject, leading to a lack of focus.​  Lack of Accuracy: Providing information that is imprecise or incorrect.​  Poor Time Management: Inadequate planning leading to rushed or unfinished work.​  Word Confusion: Misusing words due to similar spelling or meaning.​  Limited Vocabulary: Using a restricted range of words, affecting expression clarity.​  Inadequate Critical Thinking: Difficulty in analyzing, synthesizing, or evaluating information.​  Lack of Coherence: Disconnected ideas resulting in a disorganized essay structure.​  Grammar and Syntax Errors: Mistakes in sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar rules. The study's findings corroborate existing research on the challenges Filipino students face in essay writing. Common issues such as grammatical errors, lack of coherence, and limited vocabulary have been documented in previous studies . The proposed strategies align with best practices recommended for improving writing skills. For instance, emphasizing grammar and teaching essay structure are fundamental components of writing instruction . Promoting critical thinking and expanding vocabulary are also recognized as effective methods for enhancing writing proficiency .​  Conclusion:  Addressing the identified writing challenges necessitates a comprehensive approach that combines targeted instructional strategies with continuous support. By implementing the recommended interventions, educators can significantly improve students' writing abilities, leading to more coherent, accurate, and engaging essays. Future research could explore the effectiveness of these strategies across diverse educational settings to further validate their impact.
