CHILD-FREE BY CHOICE: PERCEIVED OBLIGATION AND LIFE SATISFACTION OF COUPLES IN SELECTED BARANGAY IN NOVALICHES, QUEZON CITY

Abstract

This study investigates the rising trend of child-free couples in Filipino society, where traditional norms favor large families. Despite societal expectations, many young Filipinos opt not to have children. The study explores their motivations, perceived obligations, and levels of life satisfaction. It also aims to challenge cultural norms and reduce the stigma surrounding the child-free lifestyle. The study employed a descriptive research design, gathering data from thirty (30) couples aged 25 to 40 residing in Barangay San Bartolome and Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City. Data collection was conducted through survey questionnaires. Findings indicate that child-free couples prioritize personal growth, with a weighted mean of 3.43. In contrast, respondents strongly acknowledged the financial responsibilities of parenthood, reflected in a weighted mean of 3.66. The study reveals that while child-free couples value personal development and experience overall life satisfaction, financial stability remains a challenge. Despite financial concerns, they report happiness and well-being. Additionally, they recognize the financial and societal responsibilities of parenthood, regardless of income or relationship dynamics.
