Abstract

Critical thinking skills are a key factor in separating students who can do Math from those who truly understand what they are doing. When students do Math, they can perform computation and explain how a formula works, and they can trace the steps used to define a concept. Not only they can solve a problem but can also explain the logic behind the process they used to reach a solution. To think critically is to follow a clear line of logical steps and reasoning. To solve critical thinking problems, mathematics teachers should model the way they think when solving a problem. This study was conducted to help students to develop their critical thinking skills in Mathematics. The quantitative-descriptive method was used in this study to measure the experimental subjects measured before and after treatment. A descriptive study establishes the only association between variables. An experiment measures variables that may explain the mechanism of treatment. The researchers utilized purposive sampling to choose 50Grade 12 General Academic Strand students to assess the development of critical thinking skills in Mathematics. Problem-solving had the weighted means of 3.86 and 4.82 for male and female respondents, respectively. Activities had a weighted mean of 3.73 for male respondents and 3.88 for female respondents. Decision making had a mathematics weighted mean of 3.74 for male respondents and 3.77 for female respondents, with the overall weighted means of 3.77 and 4.15 for male and female respondents, both of which strongly agreed that problem solving, activities, and decision making help develop their critical thinking skills in Mathematics. The following recommendations were drawn: there should be the emphasis on the development of the student’s character and other affective domains in learning the subject to develop critical thinking skills in Mathematics, students should exert effort to learn Mathematics to improve their critical thinking skills in the subject, students should have a deeper engagement and understanding about the subject to improve their critical thinking skills in Mathematics, teachers should help students to evaluate the information they receive by determining what kind of problem-solving it is, the students should attend training should be conducted to enhance the student’s critical thinking skills in Mathematics, and the students should solve extra problems to enhance their critical thinking skills in Mathematics subject.
