Assessment of English Proficiency of BSHM Students Towards the Improvement of Communication Skills at BCP SY 2022-2023

Abstract

This study aims to assess the English proficiency of 2nd year Bachelor of Science in
Hospitality Management students towards the communication skills at Bestlink College of the
Philippines. English proficiency has a huge contribution to our daily lives in terms of
communication skills that can be applied anywhere. English proficiency is really important for
students pursuing a program that is related to their career, and it can enhance these skills and
gain more knowledge.

This study shows that 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management students are
not proficient in English in terms of abilities to read and write, understanding, and problems
encountered. The things that need to improve are communicating and using the English
language by developing reading and listening habits or practicing speaking skills. The
researcher proposed guidelines on how to enhance English proficiency.

In this study, it is recommended that 2nd year Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management
students improve their English language proficiency, which is the ability of students to use the
English language to communicate in oral and written contexts while pursuing their degree
program. Good language skills can change one's future by opening up new career
opportunities, improving personality, and increasing self-esteem. In simple words, learning a
foreign language makes the brain stronger and more versatile. Learning English is not only
useful but also brings a lot of satisfaction, and when you make progress, you feel great.
