Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of English language and performance in English classes of second-year tourism students in terms of respondent profiles, the level of their English grammar, significant relationships, the challenges they encountered, and the proposed intervention. The study utilized a quantitative correlational research method which employed two hundred fifty (250) 2nd-year tourism students of Bestlink College of the Philippines. From the results of this study, it reveals that the majority of the respondents are female between the ages of twenty (20) to twenty-four (24) years old with a 5,000-10,000 monthly income, having a grade in oral communication of 1.50 and a 1.75 grade in purposive communication, level of their English grammar has poor performance. Moreover, no significant relationship between the level of English grammar when the profile is considered afraid of making mistakes as the main problem of developing speaking skills is one of the challenges they encountered. There is a proposed intervention that will help to improve their performance. This study recommended continuous use of English tools and strategies to maintain and improve students' grades in their English subject, including formative assessment. The students need to be able to evaluate the quality of their work and comprehend what constitutes quality work, properly validation of grades acquired by the students depending on the performance in their English subject. In addition, encourage the students to speak and participate during recitation and implement the proposed intervention that will help to improve their performance and allow them to use the speech lab and battery test to improve their speaking skills.
