Abstract

The study aimed to determine the role of smartphones in the academic performance of selected Bachelor of Secondary Education Science Major students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Smartphones are a type of modern technology that helps the new generation in their daily lives by making tasks easier.   They also serve a multi-functional role, allowing users to access various features anytime, anywhere. The researchers encountered a minor issue where students were less engaged in discussions when technology and smartphone use were not incorporated into their academics. This study utilized a quantitative and descriptive research design. The respondents were selected from 1st-year, 2nd-year, and 3rd-year Science Major students in the Bachelor of Secondary Education program.   A purposive sampling method was used, with a total of 45 respondents. The primary instrument for data collection was a survey questionnaire. The researchers distributed the questionnaires using a random sampling technique to ensure authentic results.   The collected data were analyzed using percentage calculations and weighted mean to determine the correlation of the study through Pearson's correlation method. The results of the study are based on the respondents' findings, which show a significant relationship between smartphone use and academic performance. In terms of communication tools, Messenger ranked the highest, with a weighted mean of 3.82 and a verbal interpretation of "strongly agree."   Regarding learning tools, the data indicate that most respondents strongly agree that YouTube is useful for watching tutorials on experiments and documentaries, with a weighted mean of 3.78. As for organizational tools, respondents strongly agree that Google Drive is effective for importing and exporting files, with a weighted mean of 3.69.   Overall, the results demonstrate a strong correlation between smartphone use and the academic performance of the respondents, as shown in the correlational matrix. The benefits of this study include promoting comfortable learning, enhancing students’ ability to operate technology, and identifying reliable applications that may help improve academic performance. Since 21st-century students are referred to as the "Alpha Generation," they are comfortable with technology and prefer visual and interactive learning.   They also value collaborative learning and benefit from personalized learning experiences. Uzoka (2021) stated that system theory is relevant when working with technologies. To supplement traditional courses or integrate technology into distance-delivered courses, educators need to collaborate with design specialists, utilize available electronic resources, seek technical support, and engage individuals who will support the learners.
