Abstract

The Effect of Parenting Styles on the Academic Performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students at Bestlink College of the Philippines Bulacan Inc., S.Y. 2023-2024 Parenting plays a crucial role in shaping a student's academic performance. While students are primarily responsible for their studies, parental support, guidance, and encouragement significantly influence their success. Parents contribute to their children's education by providing motivation, creating a conducive learning environment, and instilling discipline and effective study habits.  Parenting styles vary, with some being more authoritative than permissive. Each style is rooted in cultural values, respect for elders, and strong family ties. Research identifies four distinct parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful. Each of these approaches impacts students' academic performance in different ways.  This study aims to examine the effects of parenting styles on the academic performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines Bulacan Inc. for the school year 2023-2024. The researchers seek to understand how different parenting approaches influence students' motivation, study habits, and overall academic achievement. By analyzing these effects, the study aims to provide insights that can help educators, parents, and students foster a supportive learning environment that enhances academic success. The study employed a descriptive-quantitative research method and involved twenty-five (25) Grade 12 Senior High School students from the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand at Bestlink College of the Philippines, Bulacan Campus, enrolled for the Academic Year 2023-2024. The results of the study indicate that the majority of students reported that their parents followed an authoritative parenting style, which was found to impact their academic performance. According to Rizwan et al. (2021), authoritative parenting is a strategy characterized by a balance of support, warmth, and clear expectations. This parenting style has been shown to influence students' self-regulation, self-efficacy, and academic achievement. Based on the findings, it appears that the way parents manage their relationship with their children can significantly affect students' ability to regulate their behavior, their belief in their own abilities, and ultimately, their academic success. The primary aim of this study was to explore the impact of parenting styles on the academic performance of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. Based on the findings, it is recommended that both parents and teachers encourage students, particularly those in the Humanities and Social Sciences track, to be more academically engaged and optimistic. Parents should avoid placing excessive pressure on their children, instead providing support and showing genuine interest in their academic progress. By adopting a guiding role, rather than a controlling one, parents can help boost their children's confidence and create a positive environment for academic success.
