Abstract

Grammar makes it possible for us to talk about language. Grammar names the types of word groups in any language. As humans, we can put sentences together even as a child by using grammar. However, to be able to talk about how sentences are built and the types of word and word groups that make up sentences that are knowing about grammar offers a window into the human mind and our vast mental capacity. People associate grammar with errors and correctness. However, knowing grammar also helps us to understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clear and precise. Grammar can be a part of literature discussions when students read the sentences in poetry and stories. Knowing about grammar means finding out that all languages and all dialects should follow grammatical patterns. The researchers used descriptive research to describe the grammar difficulties of selected Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences(HUMSS)Strand students. The researchers administered a survey questionnaire to gather information from selected MWF HUMSS Strand students. A random sampling technique was used to select 90 respondents. The results showed that the difficulties in the grammar of the students greatly affect their academic performance in terms of reading comprehension, oral communication, and sentence construction, with the weighted mean of 3.40 having the verbal interpretation of “often.” The difficulties in the grammar of the students also greatly affect their academic performance in terms of writing essays, recitations, and public speaking, with the weighted mean of 3.31 having the verbal interpretation of “sometimes.” The researchers found out that encountering unfamiliar words of respondents is the main reason that can affect the student’s performance in terms of reading comprehension, and lack of confidence is the main problem of the respondents why they have difficulty in oral communication. The researchers found that difficulties in grammar are the main problem of the students because of the poor use of the English language in the country, especially in their house and in the school and because English is not used if not necessary, which significantly affects their academic performances. The researchers suggest an English Program Seminar about the effects of difficulties in grammar, including communication and academic performance.
