Abstract

Motivation plays a pivotal role in determining academic success among students. Understanding how motivation influences academic achievement can provide valuable insights into effective educational strategies. This study aims to examine the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and academic success among Grade 12 General Academic Strand (GAS) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. The research utilizes both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation scales to measure student motivation and academic performance indicators such as grade point average (GPA). A diverse sample of students is selected to ensure a comprehensive representation of the student body. The findings from this study will benefit students, teachers, parents, school administrators, and future researchers by offering a deeper understanding of how different motivational factors contribute to academic success. This study employs a correlational research design and utilizes a simple random sampling technique. The sample consists of 60 Grade 12 General Academic Strand (GAS) students from Bestlink College of the Philippines. To gather data, the researchers administered a survey questionnaire as the primary instrument. The questionnaire was designed to capture both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation levels, as well as academic performance indicators, such as grade point average (GPA). The collected data will be analyzed to examine the relationship between motivation and academic success. The results reveal how students perceive the relationship between motivation and academic success, specifically in terms of concentration, time management, peer pressure, classroom management, academic performance, and personal growth. Furthermore, the study highlights the significant impact of motivation on the academic success of Grade 12 General Academic Strand (GAS) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. These findings emphasize the crucial role that motivation plays in influencing both academic outcomes and personal development. The preliminary findings indicate a significant positive correlation between both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and academic success. However, intrinsic motivation appears to have a slightly stronger influence on academic performance than extrinsic motivation. These results highlight the importance of fostering intrinsic motivation within students. Further research is needed to investigate potential causal relationships and the underlying mechanisms linking motivation to academic achievement. The findings suggest that creating an educational environment that enhances intrinsic motivation, through curriculum design and teaching strategies could lead to better academic outcomes.
