Abstract

Poverty and criminality are complex social issues with multiple interrelated factors. Various studies have explored the relationship between these two phenomena, with some suggesting that crime exacerbates poverty, while others argue that poverty contributes to criminal behavior. Regardless of perspective, both viewpoints highlight the necessity of addressing poverty and crime simultaneously to break the cycle of disadvantage. This study employed a descriptive research design using quantitative methods. Researchers utilized purposive sampling, selecting 40 Barangay officials and 40 residents of Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City as respondents. Permission was obtained from participants before administering the survey questionnaire. Respondents completed the questionnaire, which was then collected for analysis. The study found that respondents strongly agreed that poverty, inequality, economic growth, unemployment, and crime rates are interconnected in Barangay Bagbag. The primary issues identified were unemployment and underemployment, which necessitate strategic intervention. An action plan was developed to address these challenges. The study recommends continuous skill enhancement through education, training, and certifications to improve employability and competitiveness in the job market. Additionally, the study suggests implementing the proposed measures to mitigate the adverse effects of poverty and criminality in Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City. Addressing these concerns holistically can contribute to community development and crime reduction.
