Abstract

Many high school students struggle with understanding and performing well in mathematics. This study aims to assess the level of difficulty they experience in mathematics subjects, identify specific problem areas, and explore potential contributing factors. By gaining insight into these challenges, educators and policymakers can develop targeted interventions and instructional strategies to enhance students' learning outcomes. Ultimately, this research seeks to improve mathematical comprehension and its practical applications in real-life situations. This study utilized a quantitative research method with a simple random sampling technique to collect data from 150 Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at Bestlink College of the Philippines. The research aimed to identify the challenges students encounter in General Mathematics. A structured questionnaire served as the primary data collection tool to gather responses from the participants. The results indicate that the selected Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students strongly agreed that they face challenges in General Mathematics, particularly in confidence, problem-solving, and teaching methods. However, certain mathematics subjects were also perceived as beneficial, suggesting that while students encounter difficulties, they also recognize aspects of mathematics that support their learning. Furthermore, an action plan was developed to address the challenges faced by selected Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students in General Mathematics. The discussion provides a summary of findings, outlining the difficulties encountered, the benefits of mathematics to the students, and the proposed strategies to overcome these challenges. Additionally, the study includes conclusions and recommendations from the researchers to enhance students' learning experiences in General Mathematics at Bestlink College of the Philippines.
