Abstract

This study explores the benefits and challenges of a peer counseling organization at Bestlink College of the Philippines, focusing on mental health awareness, academics, career development, and social aspects. The motivation for conducting this research was to improve the newly established peer counseling program, promote student well-being, address mental health needs, contribute to evidence-based practices, and advocate for sustainable and impactful support services within the college community. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design and a purposive sampling technique, selecting members of peer counseling organizations based on their relevance to the research questions. A total of 44 students from Bestlink College of the Philippines participated. Survey questionnaires were administered to assess the program’s benefits and identify challenges in crafting a peer counseling initiative. Findings indicate that 54.55% of respondents were female, while 45.45% were male. Most participants were between 18-22 years old, with B.S. Psychology being the most common program among them. The peer counseling program demonstrated effectiveness across multiple aspects. It fostered open discussions about mental health, improved well-being, and enhanced academic performance and attitudes toward learning. Additionally, it boosted confidence in career decisions and resilience in career-related challenges. Socially, it strengthened interpersonal relationships, increased the sense of belonging, and improved self-expression. However, stigma surrounding mental health care and fear of peer judgment were identified as major concerns. The results highlight the importance of comprehensive education and awareness campaigns to challenge misconceptions and foster openness regarding mental health. Furthermore, the data revealed a strong positive perception of the program’s effectiveness, with participants expressing high agreement on its impact on mental health awareness, academic performance, career development, and personal growth.
