Abstract

Capstone projects are a vital component of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) program, designed to provide students with practical experience in addressing real-world IT challenges. However, students often encounter obstacles such as inadequate planning, poor group collaboration, and unclear client requirements, which can negatively impact learning outcomes and project success. Recognizing the importance of effective execution in Capstone Project 1, this research aims to examine the processes and difficulties experienced by students and to propose recommendations for improving performance, product quality, and overall learning experiences. The researchers employed a qualitative research design to explore the challenges encountered during the implementation of Capstone Project 1. Data will be collected through interviews with selected BSIT students who have completed or are currently enrolled in Capstone Project 1, using purposive sampling to ensure the acquisition of relevant and in-depth insights. Thematic analysis will be used to identify recurring patterns and key factors contributing to project-related difficulties. Ethical considerations, including confidentiality and informed consent, will be strictly observed throughout the research process. The researchers identified several key challenges faced by students during the implementation of Capstone Project 1, including poor project planning, weak group cooperation, unclear client requirements, and deficiencies in technical skills. Despite these obstacles, students also reported valuable learning experiences and developmental outcomes. These included enhanced problem-solving abilities, improved technical proficiency, increased confidence and preparedness, and strengthened teamwork skills. These findings suggest that, although the Capstone Project presents significant challenges, it also offers a rich learning environment that fosters the development of essential academic, technical, and interpersonal competencies. This research identified several key challenges affecting the success of Capstone Project 1, notably the need for structured guidance and alignment of technical skills within IT capstone courses. For future studies, expanding the sample size and incorporating a more diverse participant pool is recommended. Additionally, the impact of formal interventions—such as client communication workshops, Agile project planning sessions, and peer mentoring programs—could be explored. Practical implications suggest that institutions should provide clearer project frameworks, increased access to advisers, and timely technical guidance. These measures can significantly enhance students' learning experiences, enabling them not only to complete their projects but also to grow personally and professionally through the process.
