Abstract

The rapid rise in online gaming popularity, especially among youth, has sparked growing concerns about its effects on academic performance and overall well-being. This study explores the online gaming behaviors of Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences students at Bestlink College of the Philippines, with particular emphasis on the factors contributing to gaming addiction and its repercussions on educational outcomes. Results reveal that excessive gaming often leads to reduced control over personal responsibilities, impairing time management, straining family relationships, and negatively impacting academic performance. This study utilized a descriptive-quantitative research design and employed a quota sampling technique to gather data from a diverse group of participants through a structured survey questionnaire. Findings indicate significant correlations between online game addiction and various psychosocial factors, including academic performance, social interactions, and mental health. The results underscore the urgent need for awareness programs and targeted intervention strategies to reduce the negative effects of excessive online gaming among students. Highlighting the immersive nature and social appeal of online games, the study reveals a significant correlation between online game addiction and mental health, particularly in three key areas: self-esteem, sleep habits, and time management. In response, the proposed action plan aims to address online game addiction through targeted strategies designed to enhance academic performance, combat cyberbullying, and promote mental well-being among students. The findings indicate that excessive gaming is closely associated with lower academic performance, increased social isolation, and heightened levels of anxiety and depression. Addressing online game addiction is therefore essential for promoting healthier lifestyles and enhancing the overall well-being of students.
