Abstract

The increasing incidence of fire emergencies in educational institutions highlights the urgent need for effective preparedness and response strategies. At Bestlink College of the Philippines, recent evaluations have revealed notable gaps in fire emergency awareness, particularly among students who lack adequate training in fire response procedures. Studies emphasize that an informed student body significantly contributes to campus safety. Integrating disaster risk reduction programs into the school curriculum has been shown to enhance awareness and empower students to respond appropriately during emergencies. This study aims to assess student awareness during fire emergencies and recommend appropriate actions to improve preparedness. The study employed a stratified purposive sampling technique to ensure representative feedback from both students and employees of Bestlink College of the Philippines. A total of 90 student respondents were selected to reflect varying levels of awareness and preparedness regarding fire emergencies. Data were gathered to evaluate the extent of student knowledge, preparedness, and the effectiveness of existing fire safety protocols within the institution. Findings revealed several critical issues. A significant number of students were unaware of evacuation procedures, while others did not take emergency preparedness training seriously. Many students reported experiencing panic during emergencies, complicating evacuation efforts. Additionally, the lack of a reliable communication system to alert students during fire incidents was identified. The school was also found to be inconsistent in conducting regular fire drills for both students and staff. The study emphasizes the need for immediate improvements in fire safety education and emergency preparedness. Recommended actions include the mandatory implementation of fire safety and emergency preparedness training for all students, conducting fire drills every semester, and integrating proper emergency response techniques into student orientation programs. Establishing a reliable communication system, such as digital alert technologies, is also essential for quickly disseminating information during emergencies. These initiatives aim to reduce panic, increase preparedness, and foster a safer learning environment at Bestlink College of the Philippines.
